Prerequisites: 

  • Professional Responsibility (effective for all classes entering Fall 2011 and thereafter)
  • Students applying should attach [to their clinic preference sheet] their resume and an anonymous writing sample of no more than five (5) pages.

Areas of Law: Depending on Judge, Criminal Law and a wide range of civil matters

Lawyering Skills:  Legal research and writing; Oral and written advocacy, and litigation strategy, by observing the lawyers who or lawyers’ work products that come before the judge

Sample Projects: Draft advisory memoranda and court documents

The United States District Court, Missoula Division, is located in downtown Missoula in the Russell E. Smith Courthouse, 201 East Broadway, and has a law library and work stations with computers.   Interns work on active court cases and receive instruction and guidance from the Judge and court staff.   Duties include legal research, oral presentation and discussion of work in progress, and drafting of advisory memoranda and court documents.  Interns also observe a variety of pretrial conferences, settlement conferences, hearings, criminal proceedings and trials.
