China has emerged as one of the world’s most powerful economic forces in today’s global economy.  The demand is increasing for experts familiar with the ever-changing nature of the Chinese economy and with Chinese political and legal systems to provide advisory services to businesses and policy makers.  The University of Montana, Gonzaga University and University of South Dakota Law Schools recognize these needs and offer students an opportunity to experience China firsthand in its summer study abroad program.

PROGRAM INFORMATION

The University of Montana, Gonzaga University and University of South Dakota Law Schools are teaming up with the Law Schools at the China Youth University for Political Sciences (CYUPS) in Beijing, the Southwest University of Political Science and Law (SWUPL) in Chongqing, and the Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) in Shanghai to study Chinese law in a comparative context through courses taught by experienced, top quality faculty from each participating U.S. and Chinese law school.

Spanning a six-week period from May 27 to July 6, 2012, the program will focus on comparative law, allowing law students to study firsthand the Chinese economic, legal, and political systems. As part of their learning experience, students will visit important legal and political institutions in each Chinese city, including criminal and civil courts, pertinent Chinese national and provincial government agencies and private entity participants in China’s legal system.

The program, its academic content, and credit determinations are administered jointly by the three U.S. law schools in close collaboration with the three Chinese Law School counterparts, which provide cultural expertise, part of the instruction, and help with planning of educational and cultural trips.

Each participating Chinese Law School will be providing not only expert faculty  to co-teach each course with U.S. counterparts, but also allow their own law students fluent in English to participate in these courses for elective credit in connection with their own Chinese legal studies.

PROGRAM LOCATIONS
The program is conducted on the CYUPS, SWUPL, and SISU campuses, which are conveniently located in their respective cities. Students will have access to each University’s the Law Library, in addition to high speed Internet connections for most of their activities.

PROGRAM DATES
Orientation begins Sunday May 27, 2012 at 5 PM at the Beijing hotel. Regular classes will be three hours Monday to Friday in Beijing May 28-June 9; in Chongqing June 11-22; on the Yangtze River June 25-29; and in Shanghai July 2-July 6.
