About our Program
Our academic program has something for everyone interested in ecology. We emphasize hands-on learning outside under the open sky, as opposed to traditional college courses in lecture halls and stuffy laboratories.
All courses involve multiple field trips to relevant sites within the Flathead Basin, including Glacier National Park and the National Bison Range. Direct observation of biota and ecological processes is stressed.
Hiking, boating and outdoor scholarly fun are an everyday part of these novel courses. Overnight camping, often in backcountry settings, is a part of most classes.

A Legacy of Ecological Education
The Bio Station opened for students like you in 1899, and courses and faculty have improved every year. FLBS courses substitute for required or elective courses in many campus degree plans. Courses may be taken for undergraduate (300/400 level courses) or graduate (400 level courses) credit or on an audit basis.
You may want just one 2-week or 4-week course, or you may wish to enroll in a combination of courses for 6 or 8 weeks. We recommend students take a full course load to get the best return on the dollar.
By gaining real field experience in a research and education environment, you will be more competitive for graduate school or your next job. These courses are also great for professionals looking to upgrade their basic training.
On the Shores of Flathead Lake
To ensure your summer is a rewarding experience, it is important you know some things about FLBS before you arrive. FLBS is located on the east shore of Flathead Lake, about 85 miles north of Missoula, MT.
You can expect to meet a diverse group of people in an atmosphere of scholarly fun in the great outdoors. You will be one of about 40 students living in cabins or dormitory rooms on the FLBS grounds for the summer session.
In addition to summer students and faculty, there will be graduate students, research scientists and visiting investigators. The Biological Station also has a full-time research and maintenance staff of about 25 people who work here year round.
