BSSP Mission and Goals

Mission: The Big Sky Science Partnership (BSSP) is a 5-year NSF MSP project whose mission is to create a strong, long-term, sustainable partnership of Tribal representatives, scientists, and professional educators who will work together to improve the science achievement of American Indian students in grades 3-8 by strengthening science instruction in our schools.

Partnership Goals: The BSSP is a collaboration between highly experienced science education leaders at Salish Kootenai Tribal College, the University of Montana, Montana State University, Tribal consultants from the Flathead, Northern Cheyenne and Crow Indian Reservations, partner K-8 schools, and the Montana State Office of Public Instruction. The goals of the project are to:

  • Create a long-term, sustainable partnership of K-12 educators and administrators, IHE scientists and educators, and tribal representatives that will build on the expertise of all members to improve science instruction;

  • Strengthen K-8 science instruction through the development of science teacher leaders with deep understanding of science content, instructional practice, and leadership skills to improve science education school wide; and

  • Create significant and sustainable increases in science achievement in all grade 3-8 students.
