The University of Montana AISES Chapter will be exploring the role of indigenous knowledge in modern times during a two-day conference on March 3 & 4, 2006. The conference - entitled “Traditional Knowledge and Western Science: Finding Common Ground” - will address the following four questions:

1. What is Traditional [Ecological] Knowledge (TK)?

2. What are the ethical implications of integrating TK into modern, Western science?

3. How can Western science benefit from TK?

4. What are the strengths and limitations of each approach in forming a complete view of nature?

This conference will also provide an environment of scholarly learning by:

• providing Native American role models (scientists, educators, advocates, environmentalists, etc. ) for conference participants, particularly undergraduate students;

• providing a forum for students, educators, and tribal representatives to discuss Traditional Knowledge and its application to Western science;

• addressing issues not normally acknowledged by the scientific community including culture, place, and indigenous science;

• empowering educators with the knowledge to design culturally-sensitive curricula; and

• strengthening the trust relationship between Native American communities and academic researchers.
