American role models (scientists, educators, advocates, environmentalists,
etc. ) for conference participants, particularly undergraduate students;
• providing a forum
for students, educators, and tribal representatives to discuss Traditional
Knowledge and its application to Western science;
• addressing issues
not normally acknowledged by the scientific community including culture,
place, and indigenous science;
• empowering educators
with the knowledge to design culturally-sensitive curricula; and
• strengthening the
trust relationship between Native American communities and academic
researchers.
